2007 American Music Awards (AMA) [recap]

November 19, 2007

The AMAs were on live so I couldn’t miss the chance of watching it. (Rather than watching the encore, this is much exciting)

The show started with performances by Fergie, Will.I.Am and Nicole Scherzinger. Fergie sang “Fergalicious”, her new single “Clumsy” and “Big Girls Don’t Cry”. Will.I.Am continued with “Heartbreaker”. Nicole then sang her new single “Baby Love” with Will.I.Am. Nicole and Fergie both look absolutely stunning and their vocals were great.

Jimmy Kimmel, the host came on stage and wanted to do the ‘Soulja Boy’ dance. He went down and pulled AI5 contestant Kellie Pickler and AI6 winner Jordin Sparks upstage to dance with him. Both ladies look great. After an awkward dance, Fabolous from Soulja Boy came onstage to perform the dance.

AI4 winner Carrie Underwood then gave out the first award of the night, Favourite Breakthrough Artist to AI5 contestant Chris Daughtry and his band, Daughtry.

Hooray for Daughtry!

Christina Applegate and James Blunt announced the winner for Favourite Country Band/Duo/Group, which expectedly fell to Rascal Flatts.

After that, One Republic whose album was just released gave Avril Lavigne the honors to perform her new single, “Hot”. Avril‘s outfit looked out of place but her performance was good. She even had a pink microphone to match her pink hair streaks.

Later, AI host Ryan Seacrest introduced the next band, Maroon 5 to perform their single, “Won’t Go Home Without You”. Lead singer Adam Levine shaved off his hair, and they performed superbly.

Dubbed: The busiest host in the world

Adam and his shaved head still sounds great.

Ashanti then gave the award for Favourite Soul/RnB Male Artist to none other than Akon.

Then, Jordin Sparks came (again, lol) to introduce the next performance, the Jonas Brothers. Hundreds of fans ran screaming to the stage to watch them perform. The brothers broke three glasses and one of them even tripped and fell (not sure whether it was intentional, but it was hilarious). They performed their single “S.O.S”, along with the screaming of the fans. Two girls even rushed up to touch them, only to be shoved off by security guards.

Pretty Jordin.

This Jonas Brother fell down.

The catergory of Favourite Pop/Rock Male Aritst went to Justin Timberlake (duh), who couldn’t receive his award for he was in Melbourne, Australia. Said JT, “I’m a male, and I’m an artist, so I fall into those categories.” Hehe.

For some entertainment, Jimmy Kimmel went to sit at Kid Rock‘s seat, which ‘angered’ him. Beside him was Celine Dion. Kid Rock ‘punched’ Jimmy to the ground and went to sit next to Celine.

Onstage, Kellie Pickler and Matt Dallas gave out the award for Best Soundtrack Album. High School Musical 2 was the winner, beating out Hairspray. I think both soundtracks are great. Ashley Tisdale, Vanessa Hudgens, Monique Coleman, KayCee Stroh and Ryne Sanborn went to receive the award. Wonder where’s Zac Efron, Lucas Grabeel and Corbin Bleu. Off to play basketball?

HSM2 cast: 4 pretty ladies and one lonely lad.

Rihanna and NeYo then performed “Umbrella” and “Hate That I Love You”, with violins playing in the background. Rihanna looked very beautiful.

Grey’s Anatomy’s cast Justin Chambers and Chyler Leigh then gave the award to Carrie Underwood for Favourite Country Female Artist. Carrie looked stunning in her white dress.

Sugarland teamed up with Beyonce to perform her hit song, “Irreplaceable” with a country twist.

The award for Favourite Adult Contemporary Artist went to Daughtry, with his second single, “Home”.

Josh Groban then came to introduce the next performance, Celine Dion singing the single from her album, “Taking Chances”, which was then followed by Lenny Kravitz.

After that, Natasha Bedingfield and Sean Kingston gave out the award for Favourite Soul/RnB Album. Natasha entertained by forgetting that she was supposed to read the winner, not Sean. It went to Justin Timberlake, for his album entitled “Future Sex, Love Sounds”.

Chris Brown and T-Pain then performed their hit song, “Kiss Kiss”. Chris Brown even hung upside down from a cable up in the air. Mostly movements, not much singing.

Miley Cyrus aka Hannah Montana presented the Text-In Award. She looked very pretty with her ‘Avril Lavigne’ haircut but somewhat a little chubby. After ‘receiving’ a text from her phone, she announced Carrie Underwood as the winner, beating out Daughtry and Akon. Said Carrie, “Holy Cow! That’s all I can say. This is a great night!”

Pop princesses Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale then announced Daughtry as the winner for Favourite Pop/Rock Album.

Alicia Keys and her guests performed her single “No One” with a reggae beat. Her performance was awesome. Even Rihanna stated that later.

Skateboarder Tony Hawk introduced Duran Duran to perform their song, which was chosen by fans online.

Favourite Country Album went to Carrie Underwood with her album “Some Hearts”, beating out rivals Rascal Flatts with their album “Me And My Gang”. Said Carrie, “This is one heck of a night!”

Usher came onstage and asked for a moment of silence to mourn for the death of Kanye West‘s mother. (but was greeted by applause) While announcing Beyonce as the receiver for this year’s International Artist Award, he stumbled many times on his speech (he looked on the verge of tears) but pulled it off.

Later, Snoop Dogg introduced Mary J Blige to perform her new single, “Just Fine”.

Kid Rock then gave the award for Favourite Hip Hop/Rap Band/Duo/Group to Bone Thugs-N-Harmony.

Then was a (pointless?) thing called “Old Navy Fashion Report” which reported the dresses of various guests.

After that, Amanda Bynes introduced Queen Latifah to sing “I Know Where I’ve Been” from the movie Hairspray. She sang it beautifully.

Akon then gave out the next award, Favourite Soul/RnB Female Artist. Rihanna naturally got the award, stomping Beyonce.

Daughtry did the last performace, singing the hit single “Home” with an acoustic tone.

At last, Gene Simmons announced the last award, Favourite Pop/Rock Female Artist. The award fell to Fergie, who was shocked and speechless. She beat out Avril Lavigne and Beyonce. After a hug from hubby Josh Duhamel, she went up to receive the award. She looked really pretty.

The show ended there with the artist naturally rushed away from their seats and away from the studio.

Im sure some parts of the show wasn’t broad casted as there was more awards that hasn’t been presented yet.

Overal, it was a big win for American Idol contestants. Daughtry got a total of 3 awards, tied in first place with Carrie Underwood, who also got 3 trophies.

Justin Timberlake snatched 2 awards, same as T.I.

Beyonce disappointedly got only one award. Rihanna, Fergie, Nickelback, Rascal Flatts and Akon got one each too.
