American Idol 7 – Finale – Congratulations David Cook! [recap]

May 22, 2008

Ding ding ding! Our next American Idol is…

DAVID COOK!

Victory! Cook won! Cook won!!! Scream it out! COOK WON!!

David Cook claimed his title with an astonishing 56% of the votes, while Archuleta lost by 44%. The finale garnered in 97million votes, smashing previous records. That’s a whopping 12million votes that Cook won over Archuleta! Wow wow wow.

Cook burst into tears once more after he was announced as the winner, and he performed the winning song “Time Of My Life“. It was truly magical, everyone stood up to congratulate him. Go Cook! Another cheesy song though.

Back to the recap…

The show started with the top 12! They performed “Get Ready” with the So You Think You Can Dance cast. Glad to see everyone back again! Although I wish Idol would let all the top 12 participate in the Idol Summer Tour, not just the top 10.

The top 2 then did a duet together, singing “Hero“. It was very nice, their different voices complementing each other perfectly.

The girl who came oh so close to the finale, Syesha Mercado was given the honours of performing “Waiting For You” with Seal. Syesha was amazing.

For some reason Idol wanted Jason Castro back to sing “Hallelujah“. Aaaah! Skip. Let’s pretend he never performed.

Davids were awarded with Ford Escape Hybrids! WOW! No fair! Jordin and Blake didn’t have cars last year… Hmmm.

Time for the space fillers! Idol showed a clip of David Squared meeting Guru Pitkha (Mike Myers) from the movie, Love Guru. He gave them some valuable life lessons about… hair. Cook should shave his facial hair, and little David will have hair coming out of unexpected places. Oh my. NSFW!! XD The wise Guru even went onstage with his cool mobile “flying”… pillow? Hehe! Mike Myers is one heck of a guy.

The top 6 female contestants (who, by the way, all failed to reach the finals) then sang a medley with Donna Summer. Everyone wore red and sounded hot! Carly and Syesha completely stole the spotlight from the other 4.

Carly Smithson and Michael Johns, both the “shocker eliminations”, were awarded another round on stage, they sang “The Letter” together, it was awesome. Love you Papa and Mama!

After that, the guy who claimed that Simon have nipples the size of pepper mills, comedian Jimmy Kimmel was back to make more fun of the judges and Ryan. He said that Ryan without facial hair and all the feminine metrosexual treatment, will look like… Chris Sligh from Season 6! Oh my. Jimmy went back to criticize Simon and Paula about her psychic abilities. Hehe! Someone Randy escaped from all this.

The top 6 guys then performed a medley with Bryan Adams. All the men wore black and they sounded great.

Sharped Dressed Man” was performed by Cook and ZZ Top. I like the performance, it’s definitely what Cook sounds like.

Graham Nash performed “Teach Your Children Well” with Brooke White. I loved it. It was warm and nice.

NSLGs were high when The Jonas Brothers performed “S.O.S“. Meh. Joe Jonas dropped his mike stand and made it look like it was intentional. Ha! I love that it’s always Joe who does something wrong, like in the AMAs.

Our favourite hero, Renaldo Lapuz is back! He performed his worldwide hit smashing, chart topping self composed song, “We’re Brothers Forever“, which got Randy and Paula to join it again. It was a trainwreck amazing. Seriously it was.

David Archuleta joined One Republic to perform “Apologize“. It was okay. My goodness, Archie stop closing your eyes. Andrew Lloyd Webber will haunt your dreams.

Season 6’s American Idol, Jordin Sparks graced the stage to perform her new single “One Step At A Time“. She looked very pretty in her golden dress. Glad that she isn’t sick anymore!

Time fillers! A clip of Gladys Knight with Jack Black, Ben Stiller and Robert Downy Jr. was shown. It was painfully hilarious. In a bad way.

Season 4’s American Idol, Carrie Underwood sang her new single “Last Name” in a white dress-cut-from-the-knee-down thingy. It looked like what Dolly Parton was wearing while performing “Jesus Gravity” in the top 9. Maybe she borrowed it from her. She was awesome though.

Top 12 performed for the last time, awww gonna miss them. Then George Michael was introduced, singing “Prayer In Time“. Paula was in tears.

And finally after waiting for two long hours… The results!

Randy said that he loved this season and it was one of the show’s strongest ever. He told the Davids they’re both winners, and Paula agreed by adding that this is only the beginning. Simon, who usually has an early winner favourite before the finale, said that he didn’t care regardless who won, loving both the Davids. He apologized to Cook for being too harsh the night before and that Cook deserved all the credit.

And the winner of American Idol season 7 is…

DAVID COOK!!!

*jumps in joy*

What a great ending to an amazing season! I wish all the contestants all the best in their future careers! GO COOK!

American Idol 7 – Top 2: Boxing Idol [recap]

May 21, 2008

It’s Boxing Idol! On the red side, David Cook! Ready to punch out his contender. On the blue side, David Archuleta! Looking rather small and ridiculous in that big boxing suit of his.

This year’s Idol had a boxing theme. Uhhh… Boxing? Seriously. I’d like to see Simon giving Ryan that punch he always wanted to give him. Hehe!

Idol is completely shoving Ruben Studdard, Fantasia and especially Taylor Hicks away when it comes to showing the winners of American Idol. Somehow Chris Daughtry ended up in there. Uhh, since when did he win? Oh well, not complaining.

Clive Davis (oh-uh) and Andrew Lloyd Webber were back to mentor the top 2 for their final preparations. First song was Davis’ choice.

Ding ding ding! Round 1!

Cook started the night, singing “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For“. Cook looked great and sounded great, ending his song with his signature note. Judges loved it, Simon called it phenomenal.

Archuleta fought back with his take on “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me“. It was a masterclass. Wow wow wow. This song is incredibly difficult to perform, but Archie pulled it off. I just wished he got a better wardrobe, he wore that shirt before!

Round 1 winner: Blue side!

Rrrrrrrrround 2!

Round 2 was the songwriter contest’s winning songs. Cook chose a very rocking “Dream Big“. Frankly, I dislike that he chose that song, I have to agree with Simon, it didn’t sound like a winner’s song at all. I can’t imagine a person winning while singing a song like that. But the song suited Cook’s style.

Archuleta went with “In This Moment“, which sounded somewhat like Shania Twain’s “From This Moment“. It was an incredibly cheesy song to start with, but it felt more like a winner’s song. It suited him well too. Seriously, who dresses the kid?

Round 2 winner: I think both of them tie for giving average performances.

Pull it together! It’s Round 3!

The best was definitely last for Cook, who sang “The World I Know“. Cook showed a completely different side of him with this song, a much more mellow and sensitive and acoustic side of him. It was very nicely done, I loved it! I guess it meant a lot to Cook, who burst into tears after performing. Awwwww! Who wasn’t teary eyed after that? Don’t you feel like hugging the big guy? Simon didn’t like it a lot, he rather that Cook went with “Billie Jean” or “Always Be My Baby” and not singing a new song, but called Cook one of the most sincere person to ever graced the American Idol stage.

Archuleta ended the show with an encore of his top 20’s performance, “Imagine“. It was rather like a deja vu, except better. Judges loved it, and Simon said it was a knockdown for Archuleta. That’s very high praise. I just hoped that he’d really cry for those extra votes. *wink wink*

Round 3 winner: Cook for not doing an encore, displaying another side of him, and showing emotion! Real men are not afraid to cry!

____

So I guess it’s tied between David and David for the final performances. Both did an amazing job and worked incredibly hard, they both deserve credit.

I guess it doesn’t matter who wins in the end, they both will have a great future laid ahead of them.

On a random note, the top 12 were spotted sitting together in the crowd! Top 24 finalist, Luke Menard was diagnosed with cancer. Pray for Luke!

I have a gut instinct that Idol will let Archuleta win, but I’m having my fingers crossed for Cook.

David Cook for American Idol.

Flashback: Battle of the Davids

May 20, 2008

It’s probably the most anticipated top 2 yet! The ultimate David Squared showdown between 17 year old student, David Archuleta and 25 year old bartender, David Cook. And now let us go back in time to re-discover their performance in this -MDOC- exclusive!

We first met David Archuleta in his audition, where he sang “Waiting For The World To Change” and even got Randy joining in as well. We got our first glance at David Cook when he sang “Livin’ On A Prayer“. Both were good, and sailed through. But Archuleta deserves a point for getting Randy to sing along.

Archie: 1; Cook: 0

Let’s skip Hollywood week and start off the top 24, where the theme was “60’s night”. Archuleta sang “Shop Along“, it was a brilliant performance and the judges named it best of the night. Little David gained a mass amount of fans by his solid first performance. Cook meanwhile swayed in the bottom group with that emo hair of his which we all dislike very much, barely surviving with his rendition of “Happy Together“. Archuleta naturally received the highest amount of votes in the top 24, while Cook was at the bottom, but survived another week.

Archie: 2; Cook: 0

The top 20 week was themed “70’s night”. Cook was second from last to perform, singing “All Right Now“. Cook’s rocker side and originality outshined the other rocker wannabes in the competition, but his backtalk to Simon might have hurted him a little bit. Archuleta got the pimp spot, singing his infamous famous rendition of “Imagine“. Again he got all the hype from the judges, Paula even cried. She cried! Again, Archie got the highest amount of votes for another week, Cook climbing silently up the stairs. At this point everyone marked Archuleta as their final 2, and we were right.

Archie: 3; Cook: 0

Looks like Archie is leading! Top 16 saw “80’s night”. Archuleta, on a piano, sang “Another Day In Paradise“. Praise was given, but Simon disliked his song choice. Cook powed back with his rock version of “Hello“, and immediately was given high praise for originality. Randy loved that he made it emo, and it could be a single at once. As far as votes went, Archie remained at the top with his die hard NSLGs, and Cook started to garner in fans of all ages. Cook wins for an awesome performance, Lionel Richie even loved it.

Archie: 3; Cook: 1

The theme for the top 12 was the “Lennon/McCartney Songbook”, and we were glad the Davids got some makeovers too! For Cook, his emo hair was gone, replaced by a rocker edge hairstyle which we all fell in love with. He sang “Eleanor Ribgy“, and wowed everyone with his song arrangement. Paula deemed him the dark horse, Simon named him the winner of American Idol. We all hope so too! It was a trainwreck for Archuleta when he performed “Work It Out” and forgot his lyrics on stage. It was truly painful to watch, and the annual top 12 “I-forgot-my-lyrics” curse had found another victim. Votes placed Archie at the top once more, Cook still hanging in the middle.

Archie: 3; Cook: 2

Deja Vu, top 12’s theme repeated itself in the top 11. And it was a bad week for everyone. Archuleta sang “The Long and Winding Road“, and his talent in ballads payed off. Judges loved it. Cook and his little voicebox prop performed “Day Tripper“, and delivered another solid performance. Votes saw Archie and Cook both at the top, but the latter with lesser votes.

Archie: 4; Cook: 2

The theme for the top 10 was “Songs from the Year I Was Born”. Archuleta sang “You’re The Voice“, and was called an animated cartoon character in a theme park by Simon. David Cook got back the pimp spot with “Bille Jean“. It was an awesome and original performance, blowing everyone away. His studio recording smashed the charts in iTunes, placing it at number one overall. Now that’s something. Cook finally overtook Archie in votes, planting himself firmly at number one.

Archie: 4; Cook: 3

“Dolly Parton Week” was the theme for the top 9. Cook sang “Little Sparrow” and went into his falsetto. Archuleta did “Smoky Mountain Memories“, back to ballads. Both weren’t great, but tied at okay. Let’s give them both a point for this round. Although Archie was first again for the votes.

Archie: 5; Cook: 4

Top 8 was “Inspirational Week” as the Idols prepared for Idol Gives Back. Cook sang “Innocent” with a pouty sad face to go with it. At the end of his song, he showed the camera his palm – the words “Give Back” written on it. Awwww. Archuleta sang “Angels” on the piano, he did a wonderful job. Again, they were neck and neck in this, but I’ll credit Cook for his little extra spice. Archuleta received the highest number of votes once more.

Archie: 5; Cook: 5

Top 7 was “Mariah Carey Week”. Archuleta went first, with his song, “When You Believe“. It was awesome, and he set the bar high for the others to top it. Cook delieverd “Always Be My Baby” superbly, and received a standing ovation from the judges and reducing him to tears. Awww, he cried! You don’t see Archie crying. Meanwhile, Cook’s studio recording made another record, his massive sales topped the iTunes chart. Cook beat Archie in votes.

Archie: 5; Cook: 6

The top 6 theme was “Andrew Lloyd Webber Week” aka Broadway songs. Oh-uh. Both Davids did songs from The Phantom Of The Opera. Archuleta sang “Think Of Me“, it was rather boring and forgetful. The judges weren’t hyped about it. Pimp spot went to Cook once more, singing “Music Of The Night“. It was nice as well, but not awesome. Cook gets a point for beating Archie in both performance and votes.

Archie: 5; Cook: 7

“Neil Diamond Week” was the theme for the top 5. This is the worst week ever. Everything was rushed and the show wasn’t organized well, and we saw Paula predicting the future. Back to the Davids, Cook sang “I’m Alive” and “All I Really Need Is You“. The latter performance was better than the best, but they weren’t very significant. Archuleta sang “Sweet Caroline” and “America“. Patriotic much? Both were boring and forgettable as well. Which is why I name this week a huge blunder. Neither Cook nor Archuleta got the usual first place in the votings, instead it was Syesha who raced ahead of them. No points.

Archie: 5; Cook: 7

The top 4 was themed “Songs That Shaped Rock n Roll Week”. Cook sang “Hungry Like The Wolf” and “Baba O’Reilley“. The latter was again much better than the first, although neither were superb. Archuleta performed “Stand By Me” and “Love Me Tender”. Both were outstanding and contemporary. Simon commented that Archie “crushed the competition tonight”. Couldn’t agree less.

Archie: 6; Cook: 7

And now the most vital week, the top 3, which both Davids managed to expectedly survive. Paula gave ArchuletaAnd So It Goes“. It was a nice ballad with high difficulty which he pulled it off. Archie chose Chris Brown’s “With You” for round 2. WTF? It was nice but it was bad. Third time’s a charm, he sang “Longer” and did an amazing job. Duh it’s a ballad. Cook did “First Time I Ever Saw Your Face“, chosen by Simon. It was great with high notes to end it. Cook chose “Dare You To Move“, and it was an average performance. He closed the night with “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing“, and he ended the show superbly. Both the Davids were awesome, but Cook still wins in performances and votes.

Archie: 6; Cook: 8

++++

And so, David Cook wins. We can deduce that David Cook will win American Idol.

As usual, the die hard NSLGs will be voting like crazy for Archuleta for the win, so will the moms and maybe the grannies. Beware the NSLGs. They are scary and will do anything for Archie to win.

The rest of us will be rooting for Cook! VOTE FOR COOK! COOK FOR THE WIN!

Unless Archuleta pulls off amazing performances in the finale, or some miracle happened, I am confident Cook has this in the bag.

I hereby announce David Cook as our American Idol.

ANTM Cycle 10 Finale – Winner: Whitney Thompson

May 16, 2008

America’s Next Top Model is…

Whitney Thompson

Whitney beat fellow competitior Anya to win the title of Cycle 10’s America’s Next Top Model. Whitney is the first plus size girl to ever win or even reach the top 6 of ANTM. Ironically, Anya, who have never been in the bottom 2 and was always at the top of the pack, fell short and lost to full figured Whitney, who was in the bottom 2 for 4 times and received heavy blows throughout the competition. Whitney outshone Anya in the CoverGirl ad and final runway, and emerged as the winner. I’m honestly happy for Whitney, she deserved it, but I’m still sad that Anya didn’t win.
